Comments by the requester (optional): A Wikimedia steward typically visits a test wiki to exercise their global administrative authority in a controlled environment where local oversight is absent. Because test wikis are designed for experimentation, they often lack a stable, permanent body of local bureaucrats. Stewards step in to manage user permissions, such as granting administrator or CheckUser status to developers and testers who need elevated access to break (and then fix) the software. Beyond simple permissions, a steward might arrive to mitigate cross-wiki disruption. If a bad actor uses the test wiki as a staging ground for spam or vandalism that threatens the global account system, a steward uses CentralAuth tools to lock the account across all Wikimedia projects. They also serve as the final line of defense for technical testing, verifying that new global user groups or configuration changes function correctly before they are deployed to high-traffic sites like Wikipedia.
